Perhaps the most aggressive, unilateral action by Mayor DeLuca over the entirety of the five year post office site debacle was when he choose to sell the property nearly two months before the matter was finished at the Planning Board.
That was in mid-November, 2015. We learned that weekend just how difficult it is to reach out and engage neighbors, despite all the social tools available today. That weekend a flyer was prepared and distributed at the Maplewood train station. It informed commuters that the building would be sold shortly. In 24 hours time, seventy additional signatures appeared on the 6 month old “Save the Post Office” petition–bringing the total to 800.
And that pattern has continued, with social media discussions in 2016 engaging many new voices. Some of those discussions are linked below for those interested in seeing the recent community chatter.
